Sidney Wilson Departs; Two Scholarships Available

Sayonara To Sid Wilson

The Story: Sidney Wilson has entered the transfer portal after three years at UConn and will not return.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Wilson has a lot of athletic potential but never put it together at UConn. His decision to transfer isn’t a surprise either. Wilson was one of only seven scholarship players at the end of the season and still couldn’t find the floor. Dan Hurley criticized Wilson’s practice habits and he was suspended for a game late in the season but returned. For his career at UConn, Wilson averaged four points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

WHAT DID WILSON SAY? “I just felt like I needed a fresh start,” Wilson told Hearst Connecticut Media by phone from his home on Friday evening. “That’s one of the big things. I feel like this past year, I struggled a lot, not just on the court but off the court, mentally and stuff like that. I just felt like I needed a fresh start, somewhere I can be myself and continue my career.”

HUSKIES HAVE TWO SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE: UConn, with the transfers of Wilson and Alterique Gilbert, have two scholarships available for next year. The Huskies appear to be in the market for forwards and centers. They have been connected to a host of players on the transfer market, including Landers Nolley from Virginia Tech and Rhode Island’s Tyrese Martin.

NCAA TRANSFER RULES: The NCAA is considering rules that would allow a player to be immediately eligible after one transfer, but the latest thought is it won’t be active for next season, rather in 2021-22. That limits what the Huskies can do on the transfer market. It will also impact Wilson, who already sat out a season as a transfer from St. John’s, only has two years left of eligibility and would lose a year as a transfer.
