Men’s Basketball Player Tests Positive For COVID-19

Workouts Pause After Positive Test

The Story: The men’s basketball team will be suspending workouts after a player tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: It’s the first positive test for a men’s basketball player since the team returned to campus in late June. According to a statement released by the program, “team activities will remain on hold until contact tracing is completed and it is deemed safe by medical professionals to resume.”

HOW LONG IS THE PAUSE? The NCAA’s guidelines suggest a 14-day shutdown to ensure nobody else has been infected (or puts anyone else at risk of contracting the disease). Two other Big East men’s basketball teams, Marquette and Villanova, have had players test positive and they each followed the two-week rule. But that’s tricky now for the Huskies, who would only be able to resume workouts on Nov. 19, with the first game set to be played six days later. At Big East media day last week, Dan Hurley said teams should be able to “test out” of the 14-day shutdown if no other positive tests are registered.

SO, WHO IS IT? UConn did not name the player who has been infected, and most media outlets refrain from identifying a player unless he or she has decided to disclose the positive test.

HAS ANYONE ELSE BEEN INFECTED? According to the school, there are no other known positive tests, either among players or coaches on the men’s basketball team or any other individuals at the university.
